I grew up listening to Fela in Nigeria , even thought my mother prohibited me from actually going to watch his shows or go out at all i managed eventually to go to his shrine in Toyin street ikeja , and subsequently seeing him play live there and a few other concerts example was badagry beach and lekki beach.
How lucky i was , fela happens to be a rebel, according to his songs and various interviews he had when i was young, a mohammed Ali kind of guy or say 2pac people who will speak against certain things , most of the time the ruling powers /government and the decisions they make which most of the time affect the oppressed, as we all know there has always been a division in society , the rich , middle class and poor he spoke for the poor and oppressed, however radical he might have came across for some of us he was a hero our FELA.
He wasn’t the greatest role model a times , but who is the greatest role model was never accepted or appreciated when he was alive and that is Our lord Jesus Christ, .
I will always cherish the memories of seeing him play live , one of the greatest saxophonist , and orchestral of our time , off course that is open to debate but as an African i have to salute him. R.I.P BABA KUTI AND RESPECT like i give those who deserve such accolade , you will always be remembered throuh your music and your voice speaks on.
